About Jason

Jason Hynes is a partner and leader of the Waterloo Region office with over two decades of experience working in intellectual property. As a lawyer, patent agent, and trademark agent he provides practical business focused advice to his clients on all aspects of IP, with a particular focus on strategic patent filings and global enforcement for small and medium sized entities. He also advises on trademark matters and licensing issues.

Prior to joining the firm, he completed his mechanical engineering degree at the University of Waterloo, worked in mechanical design in the automotive sector and subsequently in electronics manufacturing.

Jason is an Adjunct Professor at Western University in the Faculty of Law where he regularly teaches courses on Advanced Intellectual Property and Advanced Patent Law. He has won several teaching awards in this role.

Jason has served on various advisory committees in the intellectual property field, including on the board of directors of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), and on the Registration Committee for the College of Patent and Trademark Agents (CPATA). He is currently serving on the Executive Committee of IPIC as Secretary.

Jason has extensive volunteer experience, most recently as a founding board member of Oak Bridge Academy, a charitable school for children with autism spectrum disorder. He also coaches youth hockey.
